RAISING THE DUST. ALLAHABAD. Sept. 5.

The situation in the Amritsar district where almost daily for a fortnightthere have been conflicts lietween the police and lAknli Sikhs, is becoming more serious. The Aknlis, who arc fanatics, are disputing the possession of a slirinelyit dmukabagh, near Amritsar.

According to an Amritsar correspondent of the Pioneer, certain Aknlis there went to a Mnhomtnedan sub-in-spector of police and propounded . a scheme by which they could achieve martyrdom in pleasant circumstances. They explained that they wore under orders to commit a trespass and that orders had to lie obeyed. But the inevitable beating was not to their liking so thev suggested that when they trespassed on the priest’s land, the police should heat the ground all rbnnd them, raising as much dust as possible so that the superior officers would not notice what was taking place. The Aknlis, it. was suggested should remain on the ground groaning.

The correspondent adds that this course was adopted by the police, hut only on one occasion, for both the authorities or the district and the leading A kalis obtained a glimpse, behind the scenes and neither approved this method of martyrdom.
