INQUEST YERDTCT ASHBURTON, Oet 18
An inquest was hold before Mr James Gow, District Coroner, at the Ashburton Hospital 'yesterday afternoon touching the death of John Percy Ashton, agtd 22, of Green St. Evidence was led to show that he was in the employ of F. Sergeant, at Lismoro, and on Sunday afternoon ho was showing a lad aged seven years how to hold a gun, not being aware that the weapon contained a live cartridge. While he was doing this the lad appears to have pointed the gull which was accidentally discharged, the shot inflicting such severe wounds in Ashton’s throat end face as to necessitate his removal to the hospital, where he died during Monday night. A verdict of accidental death was returned.

At the .Magistrate’s Court to-day Percy Lumxdcn, licensee of the Upokoiigaro Hotel, was tilled £.5 anil £9 j costs for supplying liquor to two Europeans and two Maoris on a recent Sunday. The defence admitted that liquor was supplied, hut stated that one of the Europeans had entered hi* name on the hook as a. lodger for the night, and was consequently entitled to liquor for himself and friends.
