FRENCH ATTITUDE. (Received this dav at 10.30 a.m.l LONDON, October 17. Tlie “Daily Mail’s” Paris correspondent states a striking change in the French official reparation policy may be expected shortly. The Government has decided that considerable - delay must lie granted Germany, before payment in raw materials as well as cash can begin. The correspondent has been informed privately Government will not oppose a- moratorium being extended till 1924 or even longer. Financial circles believe loans and short term bonds could be floated to get the reparation costs, provided Germany counter signed promising payment in five vears.
THE TASMANIAN TRAGEDY. HOBART, Oct. 17 Carpenter, whose arrest- was cabled on the 13th October, was charged today with the murder of Trooper Henderson. He, was remanded for eight days. TOTALISATOR DIVIDENDS. WELLINGTON, October 16. What was the Government’s attitude in regard to the publication of totalisator dividends'? asked Mr I W. H. Field M.P.. without notice in Parliament. Did the Government propose to repeal the legislation prohibiting such publication ? It took days or weeks for this information fo leak through to tlie country districts, said the hon. member, but the towns apparently knew almost as soon as the races had been run. The Prime Minister: All I can say is that so far as I know, it- will not be passible to introduce an amendment of the Gaming Act during the presentsession ; and, therefore, it is not possible to do anything in the direction indicated. Mr Field: But what is the Government’s attitude? The Prime Minister: It will be for the new Parliament to give effect to the suggestion made by the Hon. gentleman, if it feels inclined to do so.
