Then And Now. In 1911, Mr Massey claimed that the cost of government was out of all proportion to the population of 1,000,000. The expenditure was £6,000,000. To-day. with an increased population of 200,00!) tlie expenditure was £15.000,000. In 1911 Mr Massey eomplainplained about, the tremendous public debt of £81,000,000. To-day it was £219,000,000. It was necessary that taxation should lie reduced, for tin’s taxation was crippling the country.
