Giving a reserved deiision at Greymouth yesterday morning in connection with the charge against P. McCormack licensee of the Golden E.iglo Hotel, Mr W. Meldrum S.M., said that the law, as it stood, intcrpieted that mere exposure of liquor-for sale to a hoarder was not illegal exposure. The evidence submitted proved that sale of liquor bad been made to a. boarder, and therefore the exposure of liquor was not illegal under the Act. The information was dismissed.
A meeting of the Hokitika Cricket ( luh was held last evening to discuss certain matters. Mr Tulloch was ruled to the chair. Minutes of last meeting were rdad and confirmed. Mr Hoh-rts moved that the Club affiliate with the W.C.C.A. at Grey-mouth and that the fee be sent at once. —Seconded by Mr Curley and carried. Mr Bishop stated lii's intention of donating a hat for the best batting average ( f the season. A vote of thanks was passed for the oti'er. The opening day was fixed for next Saturday, when it is hoped that a good many intending players will be present. Nov. Ist was fixed as the date when all subscriptions fall due. A case of interest to tiiiibor workers came before Mr W. Meldrum, S.M. at the Grcymouth Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, when Mr F. Turley, secretary of the Westland Timber Workers’ Union, brought ail action, claiming £IOO from the Taramnknu Sawmilling 00., Ltd (Mr Gardner Wilson) for a breach of the Timber Workers’ Award, by failure to pay wages regularly. After hearing evidence his Worship said that though there was a small difference in the names mentioned, the resolution was quite sufficient to justify action being taken against defendants. It had been contended that difficulty had been met owing to the fact that the company’s head office was in Christchurch, but it would have been easy to have remedied this, and the managing director was therefore responsible. The maximum penalty was £IOO. hut taking into consideration that it was the first case of its kind to conic before him. and that it was a penal offence, lie would give judgment for plaintiff, allowing him £ld and costs and solicitor’s fee £3 3s.
