[by TELEGRAPH —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION] SYDNEY, Oct 1. Over 80,000 people were attracted to Randwiek Racecourse on the opening day of,,the Spring Carnival, which was held in fine, warm weather. The public interest was curiously divided between the Beouford and Gloaming contest from a strictly sporting .tan Ipoint, and the Derby and Epsom from tho speculative angle. The hulk of the patrons were satisfied to watch the Spring Stakes, whir lresolved itself into a battle of tactics between the rival jockeys, Wood and Young. The great crowd warmly applauded both horses, after they ' had their magnificent two-furlong struggle to the post, it being anybody'.: iaeo till the numbers were posted. Beauford had the advantage of the more skilled horseman.

The Derby should have been won by Soorak his jockey appearing not to ride his mount right out. Results:— Spring Stakes.—Beauford (9.3) 1, Gloaming (9.3) 2, Speciality (9.5) 3. There were eight starters. The race was really a battle of tactics between Wood and Young, the jockeys of Beau ford and Gloaming. Violincello wont to the front past the stand, but no serious effort was made to chase him until leaving the straight. Beauford increased his lead to four lengths at the bend, but with Gloaming in hot pursuit. Time 2.53. Derby.— Rivoli 1, Soorak 2, Cnserta 3. Full Power did not start. Cliffdale led out of tho straight, at a slow bat, attended by Sir Andrew, Caserta and Soorak. Approaching the straight Soorak on the rails assumed the lead, and seemed to have the race well in hand. He was challenged by Rivoli in a final dash, the latter snatching the victory by a short head. There were three lengths between second and third. Tressayr finished sixth. and never showed up. Time 2.35.). Epsom—Rostrum 1, Fleuristc 2, Sir Maitland 3.
