Hokitika Beautifying Society.
PADDY’S MARKET DAY ; PROPOSALS. A meeting was held at the Town Hall at 3 o’clock yesterd,ay afternoon to organise for “Paddy’s Market Day” on Cass Square on Saturday, November 4th.— five weeks’ hence. Hon. H. L. Michel (President) presided and there were present—Mesdames Michel, Butler, Bennett, Appletdn, McWhirter, Stevenson, Cowie, Smith. Pilkington, Thompson, Miss Evans, Messrs Pilkington, Evans and Niven. The Chairman explained the object of the gathering. He said the Beautifying Society needed more funds to continue its work. Further improvements wore contemplated in and about Cass Square and other parts of the town, and every penny raised would he expended for the beautifying of Hokitika. The support extended in the past had been liberal, and he looked confidently toawrds a continuation, of that support. The meeting was declared open for business and Mrs Michel was appointed Chairwoman, and Mrs Urquhart (subject to acceptance) Deputy Chairwoman. Miss Evans was appointed lion. Secretary of the Ladies Committee The Gift Stall was placed in charge of Mesdames Michel, Butler, Coulson. Yarrall, Perliam. Smith and co-work-
ers. The Produce and Flowers Stall was apportioned to Mesdames Bennett, Pilkington, Irvine and Miss Thompson. The Refreshment, Sweets and Soft Brinks Stall was charged to Mesdames Stevenson, Appleton, McWhirter, Cowie and Thompson and Misses Urquhart.Messrs Jeffries and Houston were appointed honorary auctioneers. It was decided to ask Mrs Stnveley to arrange for Morris dancing on the green, and if circumstances permitted, the Maypole dance. j It was resolved to ask the various clubs to arrange competitions on the ground during the afternoon as follows:—Golf Club (Mr W. Staveley), putting and approaching; Bowling Club (Messrs Braddon and Benjamin), drawing; Cricket Club (Mr Lovett) Throwing the Cricket Ball; Football Sub-Union (Mr Heenan) place and drop kicking: Cycling Club (Mr Tooliey). ladies race and two open ! races; school sports as may be ar-
ranged. It was resolved to invite the attendance of the Band, and to ask shopkeepers to permit their employees to attend the gala afternoon betwsen 2 and 4.30 o'clock.
The ladies met subsequently to arrange for the invitation and collection of gifts.
