N.Z. V. AUSTRALIA. [«; TELEGRAPH—I'RU CHESS ASSOCIATION] PA LAIERSTON N.. Sept. 27 The. International hockey test between Now Zealand and Australia was played to-day in showery weather, the 'ground being slippery. There were fifteen hundred present. The game provided a good exposition, considering the conditions. New Zealand had the better of the play in the first half. The Australians were unable to judge the pace of the hall. Their stick work was good, but their defence was weak, except in the case of Floekart in goal, who saved many hot shots. At half time New Zealand were 3, and Australia nil, the scorers being AYatts, Ifeapby and Bell.
In the second half, Australia improved in form, and had rather the better of the interchanges. Their defence strengthened, and their attack had more finish. The play became fast and interesting. Goals were scored in rapid succession—for Australia by Seaman (three) and Craig; and for New Zealand by Watchman and Ileaphy, the score ending, New Zealand 5, Australia 4. On the whole, Now Zealand were luckv to win.
