A good story of a Maori spectator of the Springboks v. New Zealand match at Athletic Park is told. Alongside the Maori was a pakelia who had provided himself with a flash, and (tried to keep himself warm by imbibing spirituous comfort at- somewhat frequent intervals. The Maori eyed the flask approvingly, and thought that this would be a good man -to make friends with. ■ South African make a good run, i.o said to the pakelia, hut the latte, took a drink and made no reply. Die Maori then tried another line ot atiack. “That was a fine goal tor the
New Zealanders.” In -said. Hut again tfit: pakelia lifted the flask to .us lipin silence; and the Maori, losing all patience, said: “II yon arc a f<>° * halier, von may he a good drihblel, hut you aid a hail passer. (Laughter). Mr R. Stuart Sutherland to VA? disappointed by lack ot native buds at the Cape Fodwind Lighthouse, W' *stnort. Introduced birds, he 10ports, are plentiful aid troublesome. He supplies the following list of native species he noted up to August -31 last: Tomtit, white-eye. ini (one), fantail, rifleman, wren, hell bird (scarce), hlackhaclad gull, little Lem, kingfisher, silver gull, gurnet (scarce), morepork owl, blue heron (die pail), black slnig, bittern. little him* penguin, Caspian tern (passing flocks), harrier hawk (plentiful), aid kiwi (scarce). No wekas we e noted. The introduced species noted j, ro : Song-thrush, blackbird, skylark, starling, hedge sparrow. gu*en linnet, chaffinch (all very plentiful), and goldfinch (somewhat scarce). All* Stu.it Sutherland lias been told that a few kiwis still may he found in the distiict. Iw* has seen one in the flesh, a South Island kiwi, Apetrvx australis.
