Improving Herds.
BUSIIEY PARK SHORTHORNS FOR SOUTH WESTLAND.
I Early in September -Mr W. I). Nolan, of the firm of Messrs Nolan Bros., station-holders, of South Westland, paid a visit to Busliey Park Stud Farm Palmerston, Otago, for the purpose of securing from Mr J. A. Johnstone’s well-known herd of Shorthorns a selection of high-class young cows and heifers to form the nucleus of a herd that his firm has decided to found at Okurti. This new departure on' their part is the result of a decision of Westland settlers to establish a dairy ■ factory in their district. Mr Nolan was fortunate in obtaining 15 young cows and liuifcrs at Busliey Park, lhc choice of these was mainly due to the fact that most of them arc the deseend- | ants of exceptionally good cows, which i Mr Johnstone purchased from Mr Leoi nurd White, Canterbury, when his herd i was dispersed a few years ago. These cows were as much celebrated lor their copious milking powers as for their excellent beef-producing qualities, and it ■ is generally conceded that no better cattb of the dual Shorthorn type were to Ik* found in Canterbury than those bred hv Mr Leonard White. It may be noted that his cattle were descendants of such noted sires as the imported Irish bred Orphan Clansman (27401 (a Irequent prize-winner at the Cant ’rbury metropolitan shows), laui, into Stamp 1.3(588) by the imported bull Uruadliook’s Stamp (2590), Taumutu Style (11181 West bur n Maiquis ot Bute (2718) etc. . The yearling heifers purchased by the Messrs Nolan include some fine animals by the Bushev Park stud Knapdale Diamond Victor * 1712). one of the b;st sons of the late Hon Robert M Nabs imported champion bull Diamond Prince (3102) out of a very heavy milking purebred cow. To Ante Rose -0201) from the famous herd ol Air " - * ■ Williams. To Ante, Hawke’s Bay. Ihe calves hv this cow’s son, Knapdale Diamond Victor, arc of exceptional
merit, and do great credit to men cestrv The Messrs Nolan are 1o »e commended for the enterprise they have displayed in seeming for their foundation stock such well-bred animals and we believe these Otago-bred animals will do credit to the province.
