HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15th,

The Council met at 8.5 p.m. Present —Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), JLloyd, A. Parkhill, F. McGregor, H. M. Coulson, J. King, G. H. Blank, A. H. l’ilkington. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. INWARD. CORRESPONDENCE. From Chief Inspector of Explosives, Wellington, notifying a bye-law covering the Explosives Act was gazetted, and now in force, the Council feeing agents for same.—Received.

From Hokitika Beautifying Association suggesting the procuring of a tary sweeper, and asking tfee Council, to find one-half at cost of about £2. Received and agreed to. From John Cropp, A. Wall and WA. Little applying for renewal of Borough leases at Koiterangi reserve,— Received;-referred to Finance Committee.

From Secretary W.E.A. Greymouth, acknowledging with thanks the vote of tlie Council.—Received, j From Local Bodies Conference, notifying the annual meeting of delegates will bo held at the Town Hall bn Wednesday September 27th., and , asking that representatives of the Council attend ; also stating that one of the matters to lie discussed would be consideration of the prospecting scheme proposed by the Government, in whiefe they asked for the local bodies to find j £ for £ up to £6OO, and asking the 'Council to instruct its representatives as to the amount of financial (liability i they were willing to accept.—Received; Messrs Perry* and Coulson were appointed and it wa s , resolved | to notify the Conference that the Council had no power to vote money for the proposal.

From Minister of Internal Affair'S notifying the procedure for raising Joans for relief of unemployed, and to meet the antecedent liability Received. From J. Miners, in connection with rates on Botanical reserve, which showed a substantial increase.—Received; It was resolved that if it was desired to cancel the lease, the Council would accept same.

REPORTS. From Treasurer reporting receipts £6l 7s 6d; payments £322 17s 7d; debit balance £373 10s Gd— Received. Accounts amounting to £229 12s 6d. were passed, for payment. ~ LOAN PROPOSALS. At a meeting of the Finance Committee held on the Bth indein., it was decided to make tlie following recommendation in reference to tlie £SOOO Loan Proposal viz:— “That the Council borrow the sum of £6OOO to be exjieiided . as foKlows: —£3soo for drainage purposes, and £2500 for kerbing aild street formation. Your committee i have .compiled a schedule of works which is attached but it must be clearly understood that the amounts are only approximate and that some of the works enumerated may cost more than the amounts specified and some less; and also that the .works will not necesarily be undertaken in the order in which they are tabulated. SCHEDULE OF WORKS £6OOO LOAN PROPOSAL , £ Tancred St.—Paths and ... drainage, 250 Hampden St.—Kerbing and drainage 650 Sewell St.—Kerbing 650 Mtzherbert- St.—Kerbing and drainage 450 Stafford St.—Road and repairs 150 Bealey St.—Road Repairs nmd drainage 420 Brittjan St.—Kerbing and drainage 160 llolleston St.—Reading and drainage 570 Weld St.—Widening etc. ... 200 Gibson’ Quay—Kerbing etc. 360 Sale St.—Pijiing to Park St footpaths and drainage 1,500 Extensions drainage, road and footpaths—Bealey. Hall, Sale Sts.' 1,000 6,000 Mr Coulson ,in moving tho adoption of the report urged its acceptance, '- w pointing out the necessity of carrying the necessary town improvements out of loan instead of out of current revenue. Mr McGregor seconded the motion. They were all agreed oil the proposal. The motion was then agreed to. Mr Coulson moved that application be made to Government to borrow the sum of £6ot)o. Seconded by Mr King and carried. OVERSEER’S REPORT. On August the Ist we commenced gravelling South Suit Road and after working two days we were obliged to leave it for .several days, on account Of Sale Street drain collapsing, at tlie Gibson’s Quay crossing. The timber sides and top being badly decayed, it - was decided to put in concrete pipes and make it more permanent. After finishing the drain the South Spit road was gone in with, and has been gravelled most of the way. Britain Street drain on tlie west of the State School lias been cleaned and all growth in the street cut down. A section of Hampden Street drain has also been cleaned. Several crossings and water connections have been made to new residences, and repairs to water tables and road crossing. The water service has been very good, not giving any trouble last month. A quantity of concrete, pipes have been made during the term. Tlie usual street clenaing and maintenance work has also been attended to during the moilti^.—Received and adopted. The Council rose at 8.40 p.in.
