GOLF.

PALMERSTON X., Sept. 15. Splendid weather prevailed for the semi-finals of the Amateur and protest sional golf championship to-day between Duncan and Sinie. Bidwell and Horton amateurs); and Ham and Blair, Slmw and Butters (pros.). Duncan proved the winner all through, Sime having all the bad luck in tlie going. Duncan completed the round in 73, equal to bis record lor the tournament on Thursday. With six down, the afternoon prospects were not bright for Sime, whose opponent again proved unbeatable, the finish at the turn leaving Duncan 9 up and 8. The Hortmi-Bidwell match was good golf throughout.- Hortoli had tlie advantage. Bidwell succumbed to a bunker at the 3lst. Horton’s good iron shot retrieved a had lie at the 32nd, hut with a good chip, Bidwell halved. Horton’s lead was too much for Bidwell and the game ended three and two. PROFESSIONALS. In tlie morning the game between Ham and Blair, which ended all square, was not brilliant, both taking a long nritl straight course; in the afternoon however, Ham established a good lead, winning six up and five. In the first round of the Shaw and Butters game, the former had an advantage of three up. The final resulted In a win for Ham, five up and four to play. There is great interest in a match, arranged for the . week-end between the 10 leading lady players of the Dominion and tho leading amateurs present at the tournament. Although similar matches have been played in England, it is an innovation in New Zealand golf, and from the fact that the ladies’ championship is being played in Wanganui next week, it is feared impossible to get the very best players for each side.
