[HY TELEGRAPH —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION] A SHOOTING CASE. • •HAMILTON; Sept. 12 ' At the Supreme Court William Alexander Crossan, a young man,- was charged with the attempted murder oi Detective Lambert; also two counts of discharging loaded firearms. • Evidence was given on similar lines to that tendered at the Lower Court. After a retirement of one hour the jury returned a verdict of guilty of shooting with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
Sentence was deferred until Friday to enable the probation officer to present his report. His Honour remarked that the case was an extraordinary one. Tile prisoner was quite young and seemed intelligent, while one would imagine from his hearing that lie had not followed evil courses before.
ATTEM PTE D MURDER. GISBORNE, Sept 12. The Supreme Court trial of George Monkhousc for the attempted murder of William Campbell opened today. After hearing the evidence, Mr Justice Chapman said that he did not see how any jury could got away from Dr Ross’s evidence as to the insanity of accused Whatever specific Idelusion accused was labouring under, he seemed to think that he had some reason for killing Campbell. On the man’s condition, the evidence as to the act and the medical evidence, the jury would have to consider whether it was not a proper thing to declare that at the time accused was insane and ought to be acquitted. The jury returned a verdict of acquittal on the grounds of insanity.
