Farmer’s Death.

EVIDENCE AT INQUEST.

(IHKYMOUTH, August 29. \n inquest was opened at. the (ircyu outli Courthouse this mumiiig. before the Coroner, (Mr W. Meldrum regarding the death of a farmer named Edward Henry. Green, of Matai who died at. the Grey Hirer Hospital yesterday. Senior-Sergeant McCarthy .-..presented the police. Willie Green, of Mata., fanner, nnd son of r the deceased; state that he viewed the body at tho Hospital this morning. It was Hint of is a tlior. He could swear to his fathei s handwriting and the letter (handed to the Coroner by SCnior-Sergeant McCUrtliy) "’as undoubtedly written by his father. lie found the letter on his father’s dressing table yesterday morning, after bis father was taken ill. His father had suffered for some months, but during tho last two month's ho bad been very bad. and had suffered great pain. On Sunday last, August 27th.. towards evening, lie was in great pain. When witness retired about 10 p.m. lie took his father ,a, hot water bottle; and the latter said ‘that lie was all right. Witness did not notice anything unusual. He did not bear bis father moving about during the night. Oil Monday morning lie first saw bis father at five minutes to four o’clock by the watch in his father’s room. Witness awoke and heard his lather colling out: “Are you awake, soli ?’* He immediately went into his father’s room, and his father said that he had “taken something’’ as he wanted to deaden tho terrible pain. His father was quite still in the body, but was quite sane and understood everything lie was saying. Witness immediately sent for Dr. Little, who arrived about 5.45 a.m. After examining deceased. Dr Little said that be would like another doctor, and. went to Xgahere to ling up Dr Mcßronrty. of Greymoutli, Dr T.ittle then returned to Matai. Dr Little tried to give deceased something, but could not manage it on liis own, as deceased was in convulsions. Dr Little, remained with deceased until Dr Mcßrearty arrived between 8 a.m. and 9 a.in. Witness was not in the bedroom with tho doctors. Dr. Mcßrearty thou seat liis ear to Ngahero and rang up the ambulance. Deceased was then removed to tliC Grey Hirer Hospital.

The inquest was adjourned until Wednesday, September G, when ntedienl evidence will be taken.
