THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
Thk Government Condemned.' It was i» December, 1020, nearly two years ago', that Mr Massey circularised the bonds of Departments instructing them to cut down their expenditures wherever possible and emphasising the serious need of this course. They responded by spending an additional two millions in the following year. A policy of economy that was commenced as long ago as we have stated must be voted a failure when it is found nearly two years later that expenditure has not been reduced, notwithstanding a very serious fall in revenue. We endorse all that Mr Skerrett said In condemnation of the terrific rates of hot 1 expenditure and taxation, and we add wiiat he did not seam disposed to say, that the position proves the utter incompetence of the present occupants ol the Treasury benches—Lyttelton Times.
