I HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT. I WELLINGTON. Aug. 23. Tlie Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated August 10, from tho High Commissioner for New Zealand, London : MEAT. There is a better tone in the market for New Zealand mutton, hut prices arc the same as last quotations, except for ewes. Supplies of South American mutton are smaller. ’1 lie lamb trade is steady, the demand being chiefly for-light-weight. Chilled beef is in small supply at higher prices. New Zealand ox beef in small supply. Present quotations are : —New Zealand mutton—light-weight fid-UJd. medium oJ-d-(i}d, heavy-weight 4}d-5Jd. Ewes—l id-4Jd per lb. New Zealand Lamb—Best quality, I light-weight llil-URI. medium 10Jd--1 Id, heavy-weight, lOd, ordinary 103 d. Second class quality IOJ-lOjd per 11). New Zealand Beef—Ox -hinds 4Jd, fores 3d. Chilled Beef—Hinds 7id, fores 3sd per lb. BUTTER.
There lias been good demand throughout the week, and prices have advanced. The present quotations are:— New Zealand—Unsalted 2205-224 s per cwt (Is 1l)d-2s per lh). Salted 206b--208s,'up to 210 s per cwt (Is lOd, Is 10Jd, Is 10id per lh). Australian—Unsalted 208 s per cwt (Is 10)d per lb). Salted 1965-200 s per cwt (Is Did, Is Did per lb). Argentine—,2o2s-212s per cwt (Is 0-3 d. Is lOld per lh). Irish—Creamery 1945-202 s per cwt its 83d. Is 9Jd per lb). Danish—2l4s-216s per cwt (Is 103 d, Is lid per lb). French—2ofis-21fis per cwt (Is lOd, Is lid per lh). CHEESE.

The .Manila market is quiet and steady. “J” grade August-Octoher shipments were sold at C 32 per ton. Sellers’ present quotations are:— “G" grade August-Oetoher shipments C3l 15s, “11” grade August-Octoher shipments £33 15s, “J” grade August-Oc-toher shipments £32 5s per ton. The New Zealand market is quiet, hut firmly held. High-points spot sold at t.'H per ton. Sellers quote AugustOctoher shipments high-points L'33 :>s, fair £3l 19s per ton. WOOD.
This is Bradford holiday week, hence business is very quiet. Values for line tops are nominally maintained. Present quotations are: —04’s (merino) 4s Bd, 56’s (super half-bred) 2s 7d, 40’s (coarse cross-bred) prepared Is ljd per lb. Some uncertainty is caused by the political situation and commercial position of Germany. EGOS.
