AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. ENGLISH COUNTY MATCHES. LONDON, August 22. At cricket Middlesex beat Warwick, who made 129 and 293. Bates scored 149 (not out). Y’orkshire made 539 runs for 5 against Surrey, and declared. Sutcliffe hit up the big score of 239. Surrey lost three wickets for 165 in the second innings. The game was drawn. Kent 347 and 343 for 5, (declared) against Lancashire. Woolloy made 155, and Seymour 165 (not out). Lancashire made 244 and 213 for two wickets. The game was drawn. Hampshire, with 281 and 244 for 6 wickets, beat Somerset, who made 406 and 97.
AVorcester, with 392 and 200, drew, with Sussex, who made 326 and lit for two wickets. Yorkshire’s duel against Surrey at the Oval lias been everywhere accepted as the match of the season, and as practically deciding the championship. It attracted enormous interest, the crowds being as large as at the test matches. Though completely outclassing the southerners in batting, Yorkshire s virtual victory only gave them two point,s for their first innings lead, and slightly reduced their championship pereen- < tago. Notts, through defeating Leicester, supplant Surrey for second phase. The percentages now are: Aorkslnre 71.85. Notts 70.40. Surrey 68.18, Kent 63.33.
