Mr J. Lowden, district- inspector of factories, who has been stationed at Greymouth for three and a half years, lias received notice of his transfer on promotion to Palmerston North and "ill leave Greymouth at an early date.
Owing to tin* Salvation Army deciding to open at Hokitika on Saturday next, and requiring the Town Hall for the purpose, the community winging for that evening under the auspices of the Hokitika Beautifying Association has been postponed for a fortnight.
At the Supreme Hall, to-night a public Ingleside organised by the Caledonian Society will he held in aid of the Burns’ Statue fund. The committee of the Society has organised a good programme, and patrons will enjoy a very pleasant evening, at the same time assisting a very deserving cause.

The Ladies’ Committee for the Hospital Ball met last evening in the Hospital Hoard Booms when final arlangements were .made for the Ball and Juvenile Dance to he held 011 September 6th and 7th. Mrs J. J. Breeze was in the chair. In view of the large attendance anticipated it was decided to issue supper tickets, so that a limited number only will bo admitted to the supper room at a time. This will prevent overcrowding and enable the Committee to provide amply for everybody. Tt was reporter! that the country people were contributing in a v<*ry liberal manner and given a fine night a large attendance of country visitors is expected. Judges for the fancy costumes were appointed ,the same judges to act at the juvenile dance. Various other matters were discussed, all reports pointing to the Ball being a very great success, the meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the chair.

The death took plate at the Grey Hospital yesterday of Mr Maurice Berlin, son of Mrs Currie, of Threadnaedle Street, Greymouth, at the early age of 10 years. The deceased young man, who had suffered an illness of no less than six months’ duration, was formerly employed at the local Post and Telegraph office, and was later transferred to Wellington.

On Friday evening, David, son of Mr and Mrs Tom Fairley, Denniston, was missing. It was ascertained he was last seen on the bank of a precipice at tre lower side of Denniston, overlooking the old track. A forge number of volunteer searchers, with Constable Fisher, turned out to search the creek and gullies adjacent to where the lad was last seen, and after a search of two hours, under adverse conditions of rain and darkness, Mr L. Ward was successful in coming across the unfortunate lad who Was in a semi-conscious condition after a fall of well over 60 feet. Great difficulty was experienced in getting the lad out owing to the cliffs that had to be contended with. It. took over an hour before he reached his home, where Mr Menzies attended to his injuries. Fortunately no bones wore broken, hut he was considerably knocked about. He was removed to Denniston Hospital.
