PROPOSED WESTLAND DIAMOND JUBILEE EXHIBITION.

JANUARY-FEBRUARY, 1924. The Committee of Ways and Means set up at the May meeting of the Local Bodies Conference to report in regard to holding an Exhibition at Hokitika to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of the Westland Province, 18641921) met at the County Chambers yesterday afternoon. There were present: Mr G. A. Perry (Chair). Hon. M. L. Michel, M.L.C.; Messrs W. J. Butler, W. Jeffries, R. Wild and A. Aitken. An apology wan received from Mr G. Davidson for unavoidable absence. Mr Evans (Hon. Secretary) reported in regard to the discussion at Christchurch on 9th. August in respect to the exhibition matters when the following resolution was carried unanimously:—‘iThat the meeting of League delegates resolves to take an earnest interest in the proposed Diamond Jubilee of Westland contemplated in 1924, and suggests that the Executive appoints a sub-committee to confer with the Westland Committee with a view to furthering the project and in that connection requests the Executive, if possible, to place the services of the Organiser at the disposal of the Westland Committee on conditions to he arranged.” Messrs Jeffries and Butler further reported in regard to the whole-heart-ed support of the members of the League expressed at the meeting, indicating that there would be very favourable support from the East Coast.

I A letter was read from Mr P. R. Climie, Organiser of the Progress League, indicating contemplated action in reference to various matters. The letter was roceived and on the motion of Hon. Michel the action proposed was approved with thanks. Particulars were submitted to the meeting Of the Canterbury industrial Association’s Exhibition to be held in Christchurch on November 18lh. to December 9th., and Hon. Michel made the suggestion that if cheap fares were arranged it might be possible to make ’ a week end visit for West Coasters to the Exhibition. The Hon. Secretary reported in regard to building proposals and other matters arising out of preliminary details and it was resolved to ask the New Zealand industrial Corporation which jriirposcs holding annual exhibitions to reserve the year 1924 for the West Coast exhibition at Hokitika.

The suggestion was put forward that in regard to the amendments contemplated bv the Minister of Finance to the amusement tax admissions to industrial exhibition buildings and entertainments in connection therewith, should be exempt from the tax. The matter of interviewing the Government and the local tiodies in re. gard to support to the Exhibition pro-

ject. was deferred for the present to await an early visit of Messrs Henderson and Climie of the Progress League to talk over details, and promulgate a definite scheme, including the preparation of draft plans for buildings and space proposals. The meeting then adjourned Bine die.
