Canterbury Education Board.
The monthly meeting of the Canterbury Education Board was held at Christchurch on Friday last. Present: Mr G! W. Arrnitage (chairman), and Messrs W. A. Banks, H. J. Bignell, W. IT. Witisor, J. G. Gow, E. IT. Andrews, C. S. Thompson,'A. Pevwill, B. Wild, T. Hughes, and \V. P. Spencer. Appointments made included —Bruce Bay Alias H. Fahey, sole teacher. Swedes Mill, Miss H. O’Donnell, sole teacher. Resignations received and accepted included: Grcymouth, Mrs 1). A. I' arnell, assistant mistress. An application for a temporary appointment of an exchange teacher from Canada at a town school was held over there being no position available. It was directed that the principal head master he asked what procedure they adopted in saluting the flag to nss'ist the Board in formulating a uniform ceremony.
ft was directed that the Department he informed that when the Board is advised of the number of dental nurses at its disposal their itinerary will be arranged through the Committee. The name of Swedes Mill school was changed to Burn. Mr White, truant officer, reported some schools troubled with sickness, ‘26 truancy lists had been received and 29
notices issued. Inspector’s reports on Mannnui, Boss. Boss Catholic, Mikonui, Ivumarn, Stafford, Buatapu, Paroa, Kumars Junction, Barfytown, Tnchhonme, and South Spit schools were satisfactory. The digging of a new pit at Aralnirn Road school was referred to the foreman for attention. The remodelling of Arvatuna school was directed to be proceeded with ns
urgent. The plans of Kanien school having been finally approved, this building to proceed at once. Painting of Blue Spur and Upper Kokatalii schools and renovating Stafford school were held over to he dealt with next month. Tt was resolved to accept two challenge shields, value £ls each, donated br Mr H. Bruce for a lucerne growing competition, provided the competition ugis extended to include tfie West Coast as well as Canterbury. Mr W H. Johnston’s report on agricultural work in Westland was received and drew appreciative comment. Finanos Committee’s report showed a not credit balance ,of £8979. School supple# at landed coat to Die
value of £4893 had been supplied to .lie Committees in the past three years. An opinion was expressed that the business of the local traders should not be interfered with in this way and it was resolved to ask the Committee to indicate their wishes. ,
