ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug 17. A special meeting' of the Canterbury Education Board was held yesterday to elect a chairman and appoint committees; present—Messrs (J. W. Armitnge (chairman), A. PevcriM, A. W. Banks, J. Maze, J (J. (low. C. S. Thompson, T. Hughes, if. J. Bigncll. 1!. Wild and W. 11. Winsor.

Tlie Chairman cMigratulated Messrs Andrews, Banks, Hughes and Maze on their being elected 1 to the hoard again, and he welcomed Messrs Wild and Winsor as new members. He said that be. bail beard n great deal of the new members; be expected much of them, and was confident that bo wuiikl not be disappointed. Mr Bigncll nominated Mr Armitage for the position of'"chairman. ite complimented Mr Armitage on the way lie coudueted the board's allairs during tlie past year, and said it was customary for a chairman of tlie board to be in office for two years.

Me Spencer seconded the nomination. saying that it was well to give a chairman two years ol office. There was no oilier nominations and Mr Armitage was declared elected. In thanking the members, lie said that tlie coming year would be an important one The board would have to deal, for one thing, with efforts of the Department to encroach on its flinttons.

The following committees were set-

up : Buildings—Messrs Bigncll (chairman), Winsor, Pcverill, Spencer. Maze and Thompson. Appointments —Messrs Hughes (chairman), Banks, flow, Andrews and W'ld.

Finance. —Messrs Thompson, (chairman). Bignell, Poverill, Andrews, Maze and Spencer

Agricultural—Messrs Spencer (chairman). Bignell,'Maze. Brinks. Hughes and Wiki.

Normal School—Messrs Andrews (chairman), Hughes, Gow, Banks, Wiiisor. Bevel 111 ail'd Thompson.
