Westland Progress League

TUESDAY, AUGUST 15th. The League met at 7.40 p.m. Present—Messrs Evans (Chair), Dalgleish, Duff, Butler, Mclntosh, Payne, MncIfarlane, Pilkington, Bruce, Jeffries, Morris and Dr. TeJchelmann. Apologies were .made for Messrs Ritchie and Wild. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Chairman referred to the bereavement of Mr F. Board, the Branch’s representative on the Canterbury’ Progress Leagiie, and moved a vote of sympathy with Mr Board and family. Motion ngreed to in silence. The. Chairman extended a welcome to Mr Fowbraker of Canterbury College, representing the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury, to tlfe League meoting, and enquired what arrangements could he made for a visit of lecturers from the Institute . Mr Morris reported that negotiations had been carried on with the W. E. A. GreymoUtli. It was resolved to co-ope-rate and arrange for the lecturers to spenk on alternative nights at Grey, mouth and Hokitika. Mr Foweraker explained the position in regard to the visit to deliver illustrated lectures, and said the suggestion would be met by the Institute and a visit would bo arranged for late September or October, as might provo most convenient to the lecturers. It was resolved to thank Mr Fower- ■ aker for bis visit' and information afforded and convoy an outline of the proposal to the W.E.A.. Greymouth, to enlist their co-operation.

The outward correspondence was approved and the inward correspondence received.

The Ross Borough Council forwarded a donation of £3 3s.—Received with thanks. Air Seddon M.P., acknowledged the invitation in respect to the Canterbury visit and promised to attend if duties in the House permitted. Mr Hobbs, Hastings, applied for four copies of Mr Butler’s paper on costing accountancy.—To be supplied.

The Reefton and Westport Progress Leagues accepted tli e invitation to visit Christchurch and the Greymouth Dengue regretted no member was avail, able to attend. The Chairman stated Messrs Steer and Fogarty had attended from Greymouth and the League wns

glad to have their general support. The Organiser. Christchurch, acknowledged contribution of £2O and referred to the approaching visit of the delegates.

Dr Teiehelmann reported in regard to his lecture visit, to Wellington, and the large attendance attracted. Votes of thanks were passed to Dr Teiehelmann. for his valued effort and to the Y.M.C.A., Wellington, and Mr Soddon M.P. for support extended to Dr. Teiehelmann.

Tile Chairman reported verbally in regard to the recent visit of the delegation to Christchurch, traversing the ground generally which wn s covered by the newspaper reports. Mr Evans gavo some interesting details in to the probable success of the exhibition movement, and suggested a line of action in focussing matters which vns generally approved. He moved that the Branch accord its thanks to the Canterbury League for the attention given to the delegates and appreciate the cordial feeling shown to the visitors; also to thank Mr G. A. Wood, for kindly placing 1 1 is Rteamer, the John Anderson, at th o disposal of the delegates for a harbor trip at Lyttelton. Dr Teiehelmann seconded the motion. Air Butler supported the motion, specially appreciating the cordial feeling shown by the Greymouth, Westport, and Reefon delegates to the Exhibition movement. Air Jeffries stated they were all indebted to the Chairman for Ins thoughtfulness on behalf of the dele, gates during the sojourn in Christchurch. He endorsed wlmt had been •said in regard to the exhibition and felt sure it would lie a success. The motion was carried.

AH- Jeffries referred to the action of the Railway Department in asking Air O’Afalley to remove the Otira hotel from the present site, and moved a protest be sent to the Minister with a request that the building be retained in its present position where it was serving such n useful purpose. Th o Chairman seconded and said the hotel was indispensible for public requirements. The motion was supported by .Messrs Pilkington, Mclntosh, Bruce and Duff, and carried.

On the motion of Air Pilkington it was resolved to accord the members of the delegation to Christchurch a vote of thanks for their services in the public interests.
