AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION* LOSS OF RALEIGH. HALIFAX, Aug 14. The steamer Montrose, bound to* England, has wirelessed that she picked up 43 officers, 39 petty officers* and 470 men of the cruiser Raleigh’s crew. The Empress of France has some others aboard. Sufficient men are quartered on tlie Labrador Coast, for salvage work. The bodies of three of the sailors were recovered at Armour Point, in Labardor, and were buried on Saturday.
BRITISH HARVEST. LONDON, Aug 14. The “Daily Chronicle” states that owing to persistent rains, cold nights, and the absence of sunshine since mid-June ,the British wheat harvest is expected to be inferior to that of last year, both in quality and quantity; but while tlii s will hit farmers hard, it is not likely to affect consumers, owing to a plenteousness of overseas supplies. It is further stated that from present indications f a ir milling wheat ie expected to settle down at about 50s There are prospects of a cheaper loaf.
POLICE* DROP CASE. LONDON, Aug 14. The Home Office states an examination of Neilson (who belonged to the Irish, police secret service, and was attacked in Devon) showed the letters “A.R.1.” which are “1.R.A.” inverted, found scratched on his chest. He had also a. wound on the forearm. They were apparently caused by a sharp instrument. A blood-stained razor, however, was found at his lodgings.. Though Neilson adheres to his story the local polioe have now dropped the case.
BEVAN EXTRADITED. VIENNA, Aug 14. Bevan has been extradited, being sent to London.-
MAINTENANCE ORDER. LONDON, Aug 14. The first case under the act extending the court’s jurisdiction regarding maintenance orders to husbands domiciled in the Dominions, was tried in' Marylebone police hour*. _A horse transport driver, Leach of Wanganui, was ordered to contribute 50s weekly towards the maintenance of his wife and nine children at Kensington. The order is subject to tlie New Zealand Courts’ confirmation.
