LORD NORTHCLIFFE
PRESS TRIBUTES. UNITED service telegrams. (Received this day at 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, Aug 14. Lord Northcliffe died at his London residence, where he was taken from France. The end was perfectly peace tul. AU the evening papers pay lengthy and warm tributes to his remarkable career, personal attributes, patriotism brilliancy and creative genius of journalism. The “Pall Mall Gazette” says the English press has lost its most romantic outstanding figure and public life has lost ono of the most forceful personalities, a sincere lover of his country and empire. Ilis memory ha s the chief claim to be honored as guided by imperialism of a broad vision, which would make the utmost of the British Kingship, and resource, intelligence for security and welfare of the British race.
The “Times” in a leader, says Lord Northclfffe’s death is an event of more than national import. Millions throughout the Empire and abroad feel a. great human figure has passed. Among his many qualities, his greatest was the sixth sense, that faculty of divining the course of things. After paving a glowing tribute to his genius and Imperalism, it adds that his qunlties as a typical Englishman were enhanced by his appreciation of typical English qualities, but he saw if England in the future was to be what it hod been in the past, it must possess a wider vision. For that end he felt he had a mission and sought to fulfil it. The war brought out in full measure this remarkable power. TTis impatience for men who did .not understand the war, found fierce expression. His one thought was how best to mobilise and organise the resources of the Kmpre for victory. His intense ; labours during his mission to United States undermined his constitution and shortened his days.
