(Received this day at 8 a.m.) BERLIN, August 11. Conservative newspapers practically ignored the anniversary of the Republic. The “AHgemeine Zeitung” asked—^ “Why celebrate the first day of the Republic which for many true German hearti denotes the last day of monarcov.” Herr .Ebert issued a proclamation in which he attempted to make “Deutschland Über Alles” the national hymn of the Republic. He pointed out that Monarchists have been .misinterpreting the spirit of the song for party .purposes, as a glorification of force, though it was written by a Prussian political exile while living in British territory. The proclamation emphasises the song’s asepiration for unity, justice and freedom and urges it should not be used as a party song by those against Whom it was written. It should inspire the nation to a bettor future. The most notable event of the anniversary was a setlement of the differences between the Central and Bavarian Governments, regarding Taws for the protection if the Republic.
