U.S. UPHEAVAL GROWS.
NEW YORK, Aug. 9.
The Joliet strikers now include the engineers, conductors, and maintenance way men. These latter are striking because of the use of troops to protect railway property. Two thousand additional strikers have walked out from the Eligin-Jo-liet raliroad. Following some riots, additional Illinois militia forces have been sent to Joliet. A huge demonstration occurred at a striker’s funeral. , . The strike has now tied up the movements of all freight trains east and west and vice versa through Chicago. Rochester, and New 'I °rk. Mr Roosevelt, in a speech, said that a coal famine now stared America m the face. The country did not really, know what such a condition will mean. He pointed out that the responsibility must rest with those who have refused to give an ear to 1 re.-uden Harding’s efforts at a. settlement.
