AMUSEMENTS.

POLLARD’S PICTURES. “WAY DOWN EAST.” to-night. When “Intolerance”' and “Hearts of the World” were produced it was considered that the summit of achievement' in th emoving picture play had been reached. D. W. Griffith himself though that a greater effort than “Intolerance” was out of the question. However, whatever ho thinks, there is no doubt about the public verdict on “Way Down East.” Everywhere in the capitals of the world it has been hailed as the ultimate in perfection in the photoplay It is frankly a melodrama, with the age-old theme of the dainty maiden trapped and dishonoured by a cultured and flippant philanderer. But its human touches, its sly and clever humor, its many splendid spectacular scenes, its gorgeous colour flashes and lighting effects, and the gripping power of its story put it in a class apart Still we have not mentioned the almost unbelievable fascination and emotional strength of the, climax. This has seized audiences in every land, and led to tumultuous scenes of excitement. Tn New York cheers resounded throughout the big Broadway Theatre as the perilous rescue was accomplished. Barthelmess is at the very peak of acting achievement in this drama, and Lilian Gish is unimaginably lovely and appealing at all times. As well, she reaches in this play heights of dramatie emotion hitherto unsuspected in her. The special score is a. work of are in itself. As to-night is the last screening of this wonderful picture, patrons are advised to secure their seats early.
