Robert Burns Memorial.
COMMITTEE MEETING
The Committee which has in hand the raising of a local fund to defray the cost of a Robert Burns Statue on Cass Square, met at the County Office last evening. Present: Messrs G. Davidson (Chairman), TC. E. Richards, J. King,' H. A. Thompson, F. MeGregdr, A. Wogan, rind P: J: Evans (Hon. Secretary). The Secretary reported that the previous evening a successful picture entertainment had been given by Mr McLean at the Princess Theatre. The returns would be available on Friday. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr McLean for his generosity in the mat-
ter. | A better was read from James Craleie, M.P., congratulating Hokitika on being the fourth town in > T ew Zealand to erect a Burns statue, enclosing £5 and wishing the project success.—Bereived with thanks. . . ! The Scottish Society of Christchurch i wrote forwarding a donation of one guinea.— Received with thanks. Mr T. F. Y. Seddoß. M.P. forwarderl a donation of one guinea, and congratulated the people on the movement in hand, also extending congratulations to Mr W.. Patrick for his generous donation to the fund.— Received with thanks. , , A number of subscriptions were handed in, including £1 6s 6d, collected by Master R. Stewart of Otira. —Received with thanks. Tt was resolved to acknowledge tqe donations through the press. Mr A. B. Boyd wrote apologising for his absence and offering to organise a flower show at some convenient date for the fund.—Received and offer accepted with thanks. It was reported that the funds now in hand and sight totalled upwards of £2OO. It was decided to hold a Heath and Heather day on Saturday, September 2, and to ask the' co-operation of the ladies in making the function a success. It was resolved to convene a meeting of ladies for the 15th inst, and to ask Miss Davidson to act as hon. secretary. It was suggested Scotch cooking should he a leading feature Of the day’s sales, with other stalls, and that an open air <-oneert lie arranged for the evening. Mr Davidson said the Caledonian Society intended to organise a special Scotch night for the fund, and the date would he arranged shortly. It was stated several donations had been promised from admirers of all classes of the Scotch poet. Mr Thompson reported that tire statue iiad been ordered. The pedestal would be of Scotch granite. It was resolved to ask Mi" Patrick .to seleqt a Burns’ quotation to he placed on the pedestal. The proposed figure of Burns was generally approved as a very striking model. Various matters of detail were discussed and the meeting adjourned sine die, with a vote of thanks to the chair.
