COOl) PBOAIJSES BY MIXISTEBK. [by TELEGRAPH —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION’] WELLINGTON. July 13. A deputation waited on the Prime Minister and the Minister of Public Works to-day, urging the completion of the railway between Glcnhnpc and luangahua. Tile speakers were Messrs 11. E. Holland. anil Hudson, Hon Mr Snodgrass M.L.C.

Messrs Witty and Scthlou M.P.’s sent apologies, being unable to be present to support the request. Il was acknowledged that the present was a time of difficulty for the Government. but as the .Minister realised tbe importance of filling the gap in the South Island trunk line, it was hoped this work would be pushed on. The lailway advocated would give access to three big estates, Walker’s. Kitikaid’s, and Davies’, of which not one single section had yet been taken up. If the line were put through, and these estates were cut up into smaller sections, for dairying, the district would advance, and repay the expenditures. The lion Mr C'oales replied that the representations made would he consider ed when the estimates were drawn up for next year.

The Prime .Minister said he realised that tho construction of 00 miles of line would complete what was understood as the South Island Alain Trunk Many promises had been given, and those promises would lie kept. Mr A 1 asscy said that if Air Coates recommended that the unemployed should he ».it on to the gap, Cabinet, no doubt, would agree to this. “I hope,” be added, “that when we get the Otira tunnel out of the way, we will lie able to go on and keep steadily at this piece of line, until il is done. I know it has to he done, hut whether it will pay interest on the construction cost, I don’t know. However, with Christchurch at one end, and Blenheim and Nelson at the other, it may turn out bettor than expected. Wo can only promise to do our best m the circumstances.”
