THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

Bitmsii Thadk Outlook. As regards the business outlook, \ am far from being pessimistic as to the future of the British trade. .Recently a distinct, even if small, improvement ha.s been discernible in our export returns, an improvement which 1 believe is destined- to grow in the near future. It is not for me to anticipate the outcome of the Genoa Conference from which so much is expected, but I fear the most sanguine can scarcely expect the result to he an early settlement of European difficulties, for which all arc so anxiously waiting. Important as the European market is, I feel that we must look mainly to the development of our Empire for the future (f our industry and tile employment of our people.

—Chairman London Chamber of Commerce.
