HURRICANE NEAR TAIHAPE
TAIHAPE, July 1
At 1.30 p'.in. to-day a hurricane of 30 minutes’ duration passed over the Taihape district, wrecking many buildings. At Ntiku the Town Hall, was blown into wreckage, arid the piano therein smashed to pieces. Gibbs’s Box Factory was blown down. Extensive damage was done to stock. At least 10 houses were unroofed; and practically all fences blown down. Many cbimnews crashed to the ground and trees were uprooted. The gale was confined to a narrow strip, clearing everything in its way. Taihape itself was not damaged.
FREEZING WORKS STRIKE. TIMARU, July 2. Arrangements have been made for a resumption of work at Pareora and Smithfield freezing works on Monday after about a fortnight’s hold up by the butchers’ strike. Free labour is to Ive employed, consisting mostly of farmers and their sons, who are offering in plenty. It is estimated that sufficient sheep for about three weeks’ work are available. Some farmers declare* 1 that if there is any trouble consequent on their killing, they are prepared to load . the ships also. Killing will be on the team system.
