THE LATE HUGH CASSIDY

The remains of the late Hugh Cassdy, of Springfield-, well-krtifivn in this district for his long connection with Gobi) and Coy. were brought from Canterbury to Hokitika last .- evening by motor hearse, and interred to-day 1 alt Hokitika cemetery .. W the family burial ground. A number of relatives from Canterbury and the North Island ■ attended, and there was a large and . representative gathering of the public. The relatives from the East Coast arrived last evening by special motor cars, and to-dav the drivers in tlie employ of Messrs Cassidy and Hall arrived. also, from Otira by special motor cars.
The funeral obsequies commenced at St Afary’s Church, where requiem mass was celebrated by Revd. Dr Kennedy assisted by Fathers Bonnetti and Long at 10 o’clock this morning. Relatives, employees and a number of personal friends were present at the service which was impressively conducted. At the close of the service ihe Dead March in ‘Saul" was played by the church organist. Al.isS E. Daly. Shortly before 11 o’clock the funeral cortege moved from St .Mary’s, the casket containing the remains of the d 'ceascd being deposited on the motor hearse. The employees of deceased were the pall hearers. Five motor ears cytivcyed the chief mourners, who included Airs Kortegas 1 (sister of deceased). Air and Airs T. Cahill (son-in-law an I daughter of the deceased), and many other relatives from the East (’oast and North Island. Among numerous others p'cseut wore Air \Y. Campbell, of Chiistchureh, Air James O’Alnllev and Air At. Fitzgerald of Otira; Mr G. A. Pcirv (Ainvor of Hokitika), Hon H. L. Aiiciieij M.L.C’., Mr W. Jeffries (County Chairman!, Air D. J. Evans, County Cleric (representing Alt’s It. ,J. S ddon of Wellington), Messrs G. W. Aloss and AI. Fogarty, agents of Cobb and Coy., of Greymouth ; several members of the legal profession including Messrs .Murdoch (Hokitika), Hannan, Joyce and Coates (Greymouth), Air J. D. Lynch (Mayor of Greymouth), All F. Kilgour (Grey “Star’’), and Mr C. .1. Nightingale (Hokitika ‘•Guardian’’); s.'veral representatives tif the local bodies of the district, and many old associates oi the deceased front the early days of Hokitika. Several beautiful 'wreaths were deposited on the hearse. The burial service was concluded at the cemetery by Revd Dr Kennedy, assisted by Father Long.
