The prospec ting .spirit of the milling enthusiast is not dead yet. Parties are now out in the Big Wanganui river region seeking for gold in both alluvial and quartz deposits. The river in common with all West Coast streams just now, is unusually low. and a number of river beaches are being tested, and gold is being found in varying value. Several of the small nuggets so recovered ai*c impregnated with quartz, and this fact Is encouraging sotne of tlm explorers to go into the brick country to seek fiir a defined lode. The country is. rough and difficult, hut the weather though very cold, is extreirielv favourable in more respects than one for a tour of the hack high country, and with the enthusiasts the spirit of the prospector is finding good play. In the terraces about the foothills many wild cattle have been encountered, as also numbers of Angoril goats, which have strayed at large froiit tile first animals brought to tlie liiter-Wap-gatmi country to help cope with the blackberry nuisance.
