IT Condliffe on “England in the Middle Aces,” when rural England was in existence. It should lie a most enlightening evening, and should not he missed on any account. Something unusual in the way of specials is happening to-night, when a special train arrives from Greymouth at a quarter to eight, biinging friends from Greymouth to join in a rally at Mr ltissett’.s mission in the Presbyterian Church. This is the last week night meeting, the mission closing on Sunday night. The Church was filled on Sunday night last, and on Monday night to hear the thrilling lecture on “Hilly” Sunday, which proved to many a great revelation of the well-known American Evangelist. To-night’s meeting is expected to he one of the greatest of tl c Missioil and should not he missed by any interested. A little homily on a wile’s oblignt ons to her husband was delivered by Mr F. K. Hunt. S.M., at tlie Magistrate’s Court, Wellington. This was delivered during the hearing of an apnlication bv an elderly woman loi a maintenance order against her husband, who was over (JO years of age. The evidence showed that the complainant was a widow, and found that she cou id cot get on with the defendant, a wharf labourer, after she had married him. The hulv turned her husband out, retaining the furniture. The husband bad since regularly paid 25s a weo.i. and sometimes 30s towards bis wife s maintenance. “1 refuse to make an order,” said His Worship, addressing the complainant. “You married tins and then kicked him out. A meeting of the Ladies’ Hockey Club will be held to-night at 7 o clock at the Supreme Hall. The A. and A. Stores are making-n special window display of New Zealand products, every article shown being manufactured and packed in the Dominion. It is a striking display, wellworthy of inspection.

The members of the Canterbury Progress League, with a couple of Westland guides left for south at 8 o’clock this morning for the purpose of inspecting the progress being made with the South Westland bridges. The paitv who are travelling at their own expense will return to-night, and most of them depart for Canterbury to-morrow morning.

\ man named Thomas Henry Bagust was arrested on Wednesday hv Inspet tor Mathieson and Constable Robertson, in the hush at Cowan Valley, about 1 p.m., and brought into Murchison, on the charge of that on the 14th May last at the Cowan Valley, was found in possession of an illicit still suited for the purpose of manufacturing whiskey. Accused was remanded for eight days on hail, himself in £SOO and one surety of £SOO. Bail was found, i Warrants have been issued for the arrest of two others, who are stated to be the principal offenders. The Brunner neighbourtood on Wednesday evening was illumined by the glare caused by the burning of a 10r joined residence occupied by Mr HoMiersall, manager of the new Kiwi Colliery, and formerly occupied by Mr Robert Alison. The house was recently renovated. It is situated on a hill, aivi burnt rapidly. No water was availabV and nothing could he done to extinguish the flames.
