Among the Canterbury visitors to the Farmers’ Winter School are Mr Mulleoek, a member of tho Halswell County Council, and Mr Bryant-, a member of the Eyre County ‘Council.

The proposed syllabus for the \\ inter School is published in this issue. Readers will find it of interest to peruse the time-table, and arrange their visit to the school as time will afford. Special attention is called to the' excellence and variety of the evening lectures for the convenience of those who cannot attend the day lectures or demons' rations.

Mr Clutha Mackenzie M.P., accompanied by his secretary, Mr J; W. White, left lor the north to-day en route for Nelson. Mr Mackenzie expressed himself as well pleased with his visit to Hokitika. While here he met a couple of sightless people with whom Tie had a pleasant chat and no doubt imparted a good ’deal of his own natural cheerfulness.

At the Town Hall to-night at 7.10 o’clock in connection with the Winter School, Professor Shelley of Christ church, will deliver a very interesting lecture on “The Modern Drama.” The subject should prove both entertaining and instructive. There will not be any charge for admission to-night, and no doubt there will Ik* u large attendance

To-day another big hatch of inimigrans, over 3(X), arrive in Wellington from England by the liner lonic. There are four of them for Westport and three for Greymouth, but the Auckland district is to secure 113 of them. In addition there are on the lonic no fewer than 40 domestic servants, who are being brought out under charge of Mrs Hemmington.

The Winter School will be continued to-morrow “Economics in Dairying” will be the opening lecture. A very fine general address on tho “Economic Prospect” will he delivered by Professor Condliffe, commencing at 10.30 o’clock. Tho professor is the leading economist in the Dominion and the public who can make it convenient to attend should do so. Tbe admission will be free.

There is a very attractive display of pictures typical of West Coast scenery at the Town Hall in connection with the Winter School. All parts of the district appear to lie represented and the display is certainly worth while. We hope to publish a list of the exhibits later. Among the paintings are early views of the Hokitika and Grey rivers and an interesting series of new photographic scenes by Air H. Peart which have been tinted by a new process by a Timarn artist. Air Hughes lias an interesting series of paintings, and many loaned pictures are on exhibit.

The Winter Show at the Public Hall, Kokatahi to-morrow afternoon promise? to be a very attractive display. The committee have made complete arrangements for a successful gathering. There are a large number of entries and competition will be very keen among the housewives of the district in the home cookery classes and this portion of the display promises to be a most interesting one. All the other classes have also filled well, the total entries being nearly 650. During the afternoon and ev. piling visiting Canterbury professors will deliver short addresses on topical subjects. After tea will be available for visitors throughout the afternon ana evening.

The death took place at Reefton on Thursday evening of '■* « Neil Olsen, eldest daughter of Mrs and the late John Banks. The deceased had been in indifferent health for some considerable time past, and a few weeks ago received a paralytic seizure. The result is announced of an election for the filling of two vacancies on the Public Service Hoard of Appeal, rendered necessary through expiry of the terms of service of two of the members, Messrs E. E. Hawthorne and C. do R. Andrews. The ballot resulted in the election of Air H. C. Hiilme, of the District Lands and Survey Office .at Wellington, and of Mr Andrews, who is in the Valuation Department at Invercargill, with 2601 and 2161 votes respectively. The third contestant-was Mr J. H. Irvine, of the Government Printing Office, Wellington, who secured 1512 votes. Informal votes totalled 448. The roll number is 6068.
