BOXING NEWS.

AUSTRALIAN AND N,Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. AN UNUSUAL FIGHT. LONDON, May 12. There were 17,000 at tlxe boxing niatcli between Carpentier and Kid ! Lewis. They included the Duke of York and Prince Henry. The first blow was a short sharp hook, planted artistically. Carpentier held with the left, and delivered the a blow with the right. The winning hit was the natural outcome of a. contest which was a positive traversty on Ixixing, as it is known in England. At the beginning Lewis held and hit, Carpentier not attempting to get away. The referee shouted to the two men to clear and fight legally, hot Lewis continued holding with one hand and punching with the other. When Carpentier tried to- get clear and start afresh, Lewis continued to hold, and hit. When Carpentier realised he was ’ being punished under a new sort of rule, unknown in British boxing, he appeared to decide to disregard the rules like Lewis. DISPLAY OF HAD FEELING. Carpentier pushed his face close to Lewis’s chest twice, and raised his head beneath Lewis’s chin. This annoyed Lewis, who retreated, but a few seconds later he renewed his old tnelics of i.n-lighting and holding. Carpentier again keeping close. Then apparently Carpentier decided to do what Lewis did. Half a dozen times ho hit on the breakaway. When Lewis tried to get away. Carpentier prevented him pulling Lewis with his loft. Then the Frenchman delivered the knock-out. •After the count was over. Carpentier tried to shake Lewis’s hand, but Lewis snatched his hand away, and treid weakly o punch the Frenchman. Lewis's supporters made some disgraceful and unsporting demonstrations against Carpentier, and the referee, after the fight was generally denounced by everybody, including Wilde, Dempsey, and Wilson, except Lewis and his hacker, who agreed the decision was fair.
