ARBITRATION COURT. AUCKLAND, May 12. Special orders reducing the wages of waterside workers, cooks and stewaids have keen made by the Arbitration Court, watersiders by II pence pe." hour for such time as the employers continue to pay present rates, inclusive of a bonus of one penny per hour now* being paid under agreement, with the piovisiou that in the event of discontinuance of the penny bonus, the reduction shall be a farthing, in lieu of lid to opciate from Monday next. Cooks and stewards are reduced by 16s 8d per month or Id per hour for adult workers os 10:1 per month or half-penny per hour for juniors. The Court took into consideration that workers in these occupations were not given the full amount of bonus awarded to other workers.

CUSTOMS REVENUE. WELLINGTON, May 12.

Referring to the Public Accounts, the Prime Minister to-day made a reply to certain criticisms, as to what happened the £2,409,000 of excess customs revenue that- was collected in the financial year of 1920-21, as the result of the large importation of goods into the Dominion. He says it was reserved from March 31, 1921, for the purpose of supplementing the revenue for the year which has just closed. The amount in question, he says, is held ill cash and in liquid securities, and is avail able for requirements in the current year. hayne case. CHRISTCHURCH, May 12. The second re-trial of James Reynold Hayne, a Dunedin chemist, on charges of manslaughter and performing an illegal operation, was commenced this morning before Mr Justice Chapman. At the previous trials on February 17 and February 27, the juries failed to agree.

Five jurors were challenged to-day hy the defence, and the Crown ordered 1C to stand aside. No fresh evidence was produced.

Hon. C. J. l’arr. replying to a southern paper comments to the effect that the Health Department is not doing anything in the way of experiment and treatment of goitre, said he had received a report from Dr Wilkin, director of the school of hygiene, who stated that experiments in the treatment of goitre in school children lntlm administration of very small doses of iddine were being carried on by Dr Eleanor Baker, a. school medical officer of Christchurch. Mr Parr also said he was asking Dr Baker and Dr Hereus of Medical School University, Otago, who had been making investigations to report specifically on their treatment methods and experiments. HIGH REVEL. CHRISTCHURCH, May 12. The students of Canterbury College held high revel this morning on the occasion of their annual capping carnival, procession. The chief burlesque this year was a royal wedding ceremony, which was conducted eornm ptipulo in Cathedral Square. The procession brought a phenomenal crowd into the city, and the scene in the Square was one of the most remarkable of its kind ever witnessed in Christchurch.
