j LIQUOR QUESTION. AUCKLAND, .May 5. Regarding the liquor 1 quest inn the i Anglican Synod adopted a resolution, put forward by the Primate, in pined (if the motion moved previously by Archdeacon Chntterton. The Primate’s resolution reads:—“That this Synod expresses its strong conviction that it is the hounden duty of Christian people, unless they are prepared to vole for total prohibition, to have some other drastic remedy for an evil which is sapping the morals and efficiency of the community.” PRIMATE’S TITLE ALTERED. The Synod carried a hill for nil alteration of the title of primate of New Zealand to “Primate and Archbishop.” The bill originally proposed only “Arch- ' bishop,” but was amended in the committee stages. . |
The mover, Dr Sadler, stated New Zealand was the only province of the church in the Empire which hadn’t adopted this historical and traditional title. A few members opposed the hill, on the ground that, h.v adopting too many titles the church would he in danger of losing touch with her people. Dr Julius said that a similar proposal was made previously, \Vhcn lie opposed it. The position of 1 rimate was not one that lifted the presiding Bishop very above Ids fellows, and he had a fancy that Archbishops had a habit of giving themselves airs. Ho wanted to retain the very friendly relations that now existed. He remembered saying in 1-010, what was good enough for the late Bishop Selwyfl was good enough lor tlieni. His opinions were the same to-day. He Would vote against the hill. The title operates immediately.
