APSTBAIiIAU AND N.Z. CAULK ASSOCIATION. DISASTROUS EXPLOSION. 160 LOST IN COAL MINE. (Received This Day at 8 n.m.) BUCHAREST, May 1. As a result of an explosion, due to fire damp, at a colliery at Lupini, thete have been 160 casualties. Eighty-two of these are either dead or terribly mutilated. . The explosion was due to a short circuit.
LIFE INSURANCE GAMBLE. (Received This Day at 8 a.m.) LONDON, May 1
A strange gamble on the life a man, who at present is in prison witti n fortune at stake, wiM be Held on the 24tli, when the Official Receiver will auction the insurance policies of Farrow, one of the directors of Farrow’s Bank. If Farrow dies within a year, the purchaser clears £BO.OOO sterling. If he lives for twenty years, only a few thousands, the annual premium being £3,000. Farrow is aged 50, and is m good health.
BRITAIN’S BUDGET. (Received This Day at 12.25 p.m) LONDON, May 1
The Budget discontinues the debt redemption. Ike surplus of forty millions will be devoted to reducing taxation. One shilling will he taken off income tax, and" the basis of farmers’ assessment will be halved, hourpence per pound will be taken off tea and one half-penny off postages.
PRINCE IN JAPAN. TOKTO, May 1. The Prince of Wales had another day of wonderful sight-seeing in glorious weather. He viewed the famous temples round Kyoto, and then boated down the Hozugawa river, shooting the frequent boiling rapids on the eight miles’ journey to Sayn through a deep gorge. The peoplo gathered along the bank, which in some place* ace high precipitious rocks, from. far and near, and gave a continuous reception. In the evening, the Prince dined with the Mayor' of Kyoto, and witnessed a picturesque cherry dance by some of i the daintiest singers in Japan.
