HASTINGS, April 20. Eruly this morning, n lire broke out in Jas. McClaughlan’s fruit shop, Hcretaunga Street, It was completely gutted. "The lire spread through the ceilings to Joseph’s restaurant on one side, and Dunekley (tailor) on the other. The restaurant and contents were practically destroyed and Thmcklev’s shop was badly damaged and the stock ruined. Insurances, McLaughlin £3SO in Australian Alliance, Dunckleys £6OO in liritish Traders, Joseph T 320 in Yorkshire. C. Hughes, owner of the buildings, is covered in the Guardian Office, the amount being uiia seer tain able. A COLLEGE GIFT. WELLINGTON, April 29 A Wellington lady lias given a £IOO debenture to the College Board oi Governors, for an annual prize to girls and hoys who shall write the best essay on some specific subject inculcating good citizenship.
