HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, APRIL 29

The Council met at 8 p.m. Present: Messrs 0. A. Perry (Mayor). Coulson. Wooil. Pnrkliill, Pilkington, McGregor, King, Blank, Perlnun.

The minutes were confirmed and cor respondence outward approved.

INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Hokitika Beautifying Associa Lion, forwarding £O4 Is lid, half cost of installing coppers etc on Cass Square.—Received. From J. Chambers and Son, in reference to wood stave pipes, asking the opinion of tho Council on iheir unit-ability.—-Received ; Town Clerk to reply. From Bank of New Zealand, re hank overdraft. — Received, and formal resolution required was passed. From James Park, stating that with the poimission of the Council several native hush lovers were prepared to plant a native plantation if a suitable position was available, and suggesting as a suitable one the closed portion of. Sewell Street between Weld and Stafford Streets. —Received. Mr Blank objected to the street being planted. Mr Coulson supported the proposal, but did not favor using a street. Mr King suggested that a plantation was required at the abattoirs and tins would be a suitable site. Mr Perliam supported Mr King’s suggestion. Tins was put in motion form and agreed to. From Hokitika Harbor Board, accepting offer for Council to collect harbor rates.—Received and agreed to. From Same, advising tlnU the Board did not have the power to change tic rating from capital to unimproved value. —Received. From Hokitika Athletic and Cycling Club, thanking Council for use of Cass Square. —Received. From Westland County Council, estimating cost of repairs to South Hokitika road at £35 15s.—Received ; action of Public Works Committee iir authorising works was approved. From Forestry Department, ciiculai re trees for plantations. —Received. From II a eke 11 audio., asking permission to cross loot path on Gibson t)un.i with drily road oil to adjoining section. -Received. Mr Coulson pointed out die danger at the railway crossing on Gibson Quay, due to shunting and loading of trucks at the skids. The Letter was referred to the Public Hoiks Committee to investigate and deal with, and to report generally on the question of timber stacking on the road\\a\. From .1. Pickering, complaining of state of footpath in Park Street near his property. —-Received; re-1 cried to Public Works Committee to deal with. From W. Carter, asking for water connection to new resilience at corner oi Weld and RoUeston Streets and with roadway connection to same.—Received, referred to Overseer.

From Westland Hospital Board, notifying the levy struck for the ensuing year, payable in nine instalments, ending on -lan. 31st, 1923.— Received. From Dr Buchanan, Superintendent. Mental Hospital, protesting at proposed water rate of Is fid 1000 gallons, and suggesting that Is he clanged. Received. The Mayor said they had fully discussed the question previously. Mr King moved that Messrs Wood and Coulson he authorised to confer "'ith Dr Buchanan. —Seconded by Mr Park hill atul carried. From Palmerston North Council, stating that Is fid per 1000 gallons was charged to public institutions for water supplied.—Received. From Public Trust Department. Wellington, asking for payment of interest due.— Received; already attended to. From Westland branch of Canterbury Progress League asking that the Town Hall lie made available for the Wilder School from May loth, to 20th.—Received and request granted, free of charge. From Magistrate's Court Office stating fees and lines collected for Borough for fi months ended 31st March totalled £G os.—Received. s

From G. Wormington, asking for attention to drain near his propel tv. Received; to be attended to. From Hokitika Gas Coy., Ltd. asking that the high trees on Cass Square opposite the Gas holder be topped to save possible damage.—Received ; referred to Overseer for attention.

From H. R. S"'cney, complaining of growth of goi'se in front of his premises •iiql asking lt>r attention. —Received; referred to the Public W orks Committee to deal with.

From Health Office, Christchurch, requesting Council to arrange for weekly collection of refuse in the town. —Received; refererd to Public Works Committee to report.

From Inspector of Explosives report on recent visit of inspection. ‘Rcceieed; referred to a committee consisting of ’Messrs Coulsin, Perliam and Wood to report at next meeting. From Hokitika Sports and Cycling Club enclosing £7 2s being 10% ol gross gate at recent sports.— Received. •From Treasurer reporting receipts £1440 2s lid; payments £944 8s 3d., credit balance £BB 18s 9d.—Received. Accounts amounting to £330 3s 2d were passed for payment. From Manager of Abattoirs (Mr JJarman) reporting there were examined during month of March, G cows, 92 bullocks, 283 sheep, 195 lambs, 15 pigs, 4 calves. Condemned 1 cow, 1 bullock. Fees for period £79 3s fid.—Received. Mr Parham moved in connection with correspondence previously before the Council that the Council has no objection to a petition being sent on to the Go-vernor-General in connection with the proposal to merge that portion of the Borough on the south side of the Hokitika Borough in the county of Westland. Seconded by Mr Wood and carried. The Council rose at 9.25 p.m.
