The Post Office.
“MUST PAY ITS WAV.”
WANGANUI, April 21
That the Post Office must pay its way was emphasised by the Postmaster General (the Hon. .1. G. Coates) in an address at Baetihi last evening. The Post Office was a good criterion, and probably the host barometer. 'lhcy had passed through a strenuous year. Last year the Department went hack :Clof>o though perhaps that was not a great deal. The work of his Department was to, at least, make the Post Office pay its wav. The loss was due to increased overhead charges. On the other hand the charges to the public had been increased hut there was a. limit to that. They had made economies during the year and hoped to bring the position out £l/10,000 to the good over expenditure. It meant ' insistent work and constant attention to firing that about. He believed flint the figures on tlie next balance-sheet would show that that position was correct. The deposits amounted to £-15,000,000 and the withdrawals ,to £42,000,000, the average deposits being £OS. Every other person in New Zealand had a. deposit in the Post Office Savings Bank, and that was a wholesome sign, and a. good position.
