THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
Poppies. (By G. Ethel Marten, Ballarat). Poppies for sleep; and for remembering* Red poppies! Like a crimson banner spread Upon the quiet hills, the clovered grass, Glowing and rich and warm, about the dead, While tenderly the soft cloud shadows pass, They sway and whisper there—and, here we bring Poppies for every heart’s remembering, Red poppies. Red for splendour of a brave deed done. Red. for the undimmed glorv of love’s fire, , Whose crimson glow will deep’ning burn away. Red for the flame of life still leaping higher Towards the dawning of a greater day; And sign of triumph and of victory won, Of courage, comfort, and a brave deed done, j Red poppies. I
The flowers droop, the silken petals fade, The years go by, but we do not forget. The widening stream of time may intervene, Until the past is veiled in distance, yet No power shall take from us what once has been. Upon love’s altar reverently are laid Symbol of memories that will never fade, Red poppies.
