CHARGE OF MURDER. THAMES, April 11

Proceedings concluded this moining in connection with the preliminary charges against Arthur V illiam T age, for the alleged murder of Mrs Gladys M. Hutchison at Pipiroa on 9th February. Accused was committed to stand his trial ;at Auckland on a charge of wilful murder. The evidence disclosed the tact that accused made a voluntary statement to the police, admitting the crime and saying he alone was responsible. At the inquest •in connection with the death of the deceased woman, a. verdict was returned by J. H. Salmond S.M., (Coroner), that Mrs Hutchison met hei death in accordance with the medical evidence, as the result of gunshot wounds inflicted by Page earlier in the day. Throughout the proceedings the accused maintained an attitude of noncbaience. almost approaching indifference. ■

PUBLIC SERVANTS’ MOTION. AUCKLAND, April 11. The Auckland Branch of the Public Service Association at its annual meeting, resolved expressing regret at the attitude adopted by the Post and Telegraph Association, to link up with the Alliance of Labour, and conveying to the Premier an assurance of loyalty of the members of the general public service of Auckland.

NEW BRIGHTON FIRE. CHRISTCHURCH, 'April 11. A fire which broke out early this morning in a dwelling occupied by H.M. Price resulted in the destruction of the Ozone Cafe, a fine building in North New Brighton, extensively patronised in the holiday season ; and also various out-buildings including a motor garage. The cafe, which was owned bv Airs Rucks, and was being taken over today by hen son in law was insured for £4OOO, and contents; Price’s was in sured for £250, and contents £SO; the garage was insured for £IOO. all in the State Office. The stock in a grocery shop in the cafe block owned by Thompson was insured for £4OO in the Yorkshire Company. The fire spread so rapidly that practically nothing was saved.
