NATIONAL DEFENCE LEAGUE AUCKLAND, April 12.

A largely attended public meeting addressed by the Mayor and General Russell formed an Auckland branch of the National Defence League.

EGG-LAYING COMPETITION

PHENOMENAL RESULTS.

CHRISTCHURCH, April 8

The New Zealand Utility Poultry Chili’s seventeenth egg-laying competition lias been terminated. Phenomenal egg-laying was again recorded by individual birds. In the single pen section, W. H. West’s White Leghorn laid 330 eggs for fifty-one weeks, although she did not come into profit until ten days after the commencement of the competition. Her performance since October 13th lias never been equalled in any competition, lading an egg daily for 175 consecutive days. In laying 815 eggs in fifty-one weeks, R. 3V. Coonibes’s (Dunedin) White Leghorns created a now record for three‘birds. In .the ducks section heavy scoring was done by R. • Hawke’s and T. Douthwaite’s single penned d.y-ks, laying 329 and 319 eggs respectively. A noticeable feature of the present competition is the increased average egg yield from Silver Wvandottes, it being 212 eggs per bird.

A LABOR MOTION. , AUCKLAND, April 12. A meeting of the’ Trades Union Executive congratulated the P. and T. Association on joining the Alliance of Labour and promised support, if necessary. The meeting recommended the calling of a national conference of Labour and Ausralian Workers’ Union with all other Trades’ Unions in New Zealand. .

SCULLING RACE DEPOSITS. WANGANUI. April 12.
