The matter of unemployment in the City (hiring the coming winter was mentioned at the City Council meeting to-night. Cr. Hunter said that con sidorahla unemployment existed and the position was likely to become worse. He moved that the Government be asked to state, at once, what steps it intends to take to deal with unemployment.
Cr. McKellar said the Council should endeavour to manage their own affairs, and not rush to the Government for help. The' electricity Department had work in hand which could bo started very shortly now, and which would employ a considerable number of men during the winter months. Cr. Andrews said that the Reserves Committe were about to start on the planting of another 90 acres at Pottle Lake. The .Mayor said the new Municipal Building and the Memorial Bridge non Id also provide work. Cr. Hunter said the Government should be urged to put in hand its works in the country, so that the men without dependents might go out to the country, and so relieve ihe position in the eitv for the benefit ol the married men with families. Cr. Elesher suggested that the Government be asked to subsidise what was raised locally for the benefit of unemployed. The Mayor said that an application on those lines would lie made. Cr. Hunter’s motion was carried.
