The Town Clerk notifies that the Balance sheet and statement of accounts of the Jjokitika Borough Council for the year ended 31st. March, 1021, is now open for inspection at his office.

It is notified that the Banks will observe holidays on Friday next (Good Friday), Saturday, 15th April, and Easter Monday, 17th inst. (statutory holidays), and Tuesday, April 18th. (special bank holiday).

There is a long string of entries for the Easter meeting of the Westland Racing Club. The entries total 142, as against 124 last Easter. For the coming meeting entries have been received from about 80 horses. The fields are well divided and include a number of North Island horses. The entry for the big race is the strongest yet received for an autumn meeting. Mr Jas. Noble’s handicaps are due on tho 17th. and acceptances close on the 18th. The races take place on the 19th. inst.

Much improvement is being done to the appearance of Cn&s Square just now. Long stretches of the fencing, have been painted, as also the pavilion. The grounds are being put in good trim for the sports at Easter. The track should be out of hand in a day Or two, and will be iii a creditable order. The field itself is greatly improved, The mowing of the grass is having a good effect. The custodian is requesting pedestrians to avoid walking across the fields, and purposes doing away with the unsightly tracks which score the sward at different angles, It Will be some tihie before ornamentation work can be put in haild. but the work now being done indicates the interest in the ground, and it is certainly taking on a more sightly appearance.

During the last few weeks the interior <:f Princess Theatre, particularly the proeenium and the scenery, has been redecorated by Mr W. J. Beck, the wellknown scenic artist of Wellington, Mr Reck did the decorative work at the Princess Theatre when the building was remodelled some years ago, alul he has again carried out the work with equal satisfaction in regard both to the effect and the quality of the work. A new interior 1 set for the stage has been clone, also the proeenium wings have been artistically ledecuraled. Two bach cloths have been painted, olie >4 garden scene which will l>e much admired, am! the other a taking view of Lake Kanieri. A new drop curtain of blue baize lias been installed, anil is in keeping with the color decoration of the procenium, having a very rich appearance. The proeenium itself has drawn forth some of Mr Beck’s best work, and is a very handsome piece of ornamentation. The scheine is rich in color, and the florai decorations introduced are ven appropriate, in the sliv Cffct’t tor the upper border, cupids with garlands of flowers have been introduced, and malm a very eqective finish. The balustrade of the dress circle has been redecorated also, making the iiiteriin- decorations quite harmonious. Mr Rec-k is to he complimented on the first-class work and finish put into the decoration. Additional dressing room accommodation is to he built for the use of companies, and the stage conveniences made more comfortable. The enlargement of the theatre itself is said to he in mind, including the provision of a deeper stage for high class productions. Altogether the proprietors of Princess Theatre are keeping pace with the times, and intend to keep the building fully up to local requirements in catering for all classes of amusements and the volume of patronage accorded them.

The Committee of the Westland Racing Club met last night, Mr W. K. Williams (President) occupying the chair. There was a full attendance of the Committee. The nominations received for the Easter meeting <pu’ fished in this issue) were considered highly satisfactory, assuring the pronounced success of the meeting. Various circular letters from the New Zealand Pacing Conference were received with thanks. The right for a pie cart stand in the outside portioil of the public grounds was granted to W. White for for the day. The Secretary reported the completion of the repairs to the track. The field pipe drainage at one part hitherto wet, was most satisfactory. A supply of crockery had been imported from Home and arrived in good condition. Additional boilers were being installed for the refreshment rooms. A quantity of soil for repair work bad been delivered and further supplies would be necessary later. The training track, it was stated, was not being used as much as it should. It was resolved to close the racing track ior all but fast work to be done only with the caretaker s permission. All slow work and light exercise work must in future be done on the training track which wifi be kept in good order for the purpose. It was 'devilled to instruct the caretaker to act on these lines foi* the future in order to get the grass track into first class order for the meeting. Various arrangements for the coming meeting were agreed to.
