Mr and Mrs Seddon reached Mahitahi last evening on their upward journey from South Westland. Th e date of the social here to Mr and Mrs Seddon has been fixed for Monday, April 24th, when the function will be held in the Opera House. Tickets are now on sale.
On Thursday evening next at Longford Hall, Kokatahi, Hon H. L. Michel will deliver Ins interesting lecture on “Samoa and tbe Islands of the Pacific,” which was given with such success at the Town Hall a few weeks ago. The theme of tlie address is most interesting and the subject is in most capable hands. Tbe proceeds will be devoted to the funds of the Hokitika Beautifying Association.
It is understood that Sir Joseph Ward, whose health has greatly improved of late, Will be visiting Rotorua in the course of a week or so, says the “Rotorua Chronicle.” It is also rumoured that certain supporters of the late Liberal Government have a movement on foot to petition him to stand for Parliament in this electorate. Should he do so, there will be an interesting trial of strength between tbe parties,
Mr O. E. Burton, 8.A., litis been appointed by the New Zealand Affiance as special organiser iii connection with work amoiig young people, the churches', and generally to organise for the Prohibition Party in view Of the forthcoming poll. Mi" Burton, who is a returned soldier, holding two decorations, is the author of tbe “Official History of tbe Auckland Regiment” and other works. Mr Burton was , until recently, eilgrtged iff connection-with Y.M.C.A. work in Wellington, but is at present in Auckland.
Subsequent to the meeting Of the Westland Racing Club last flight, Mr Williams oil behalf of the Club presented Mr H. Rutland with" a silver stop watch as a mark of Usteetn for the good work he lias doiie over a number of years for the Club as an official and active member. All present eulogised Mr Butland’s many services in the past, and he wa s complimented on his success as a starter. Reference was made also to the great help Airs Butland had been to the Club. The health of Mr and Mrs Butland was heartily toasted with musical hortors. Mi - Rutland acknowledged the compliments paid him ahd thanked the Club for the present which had come on him as a great surprise.
On the Bowling Green last evening the final was played-Of the pairs handicap competition for trophies presented by Mr J. J. Mclntosh. The game had been started the previous evening, seven heads being completed when darkness set in. Last evening there was quite an interested number of players on the green to see tlie concluding play, and they were rewarded with some excellent shots, in spite of tbe green being heavy. The game ended in a win for Messrs Bain and Stevenson (scratch) with 21 points, against 1(5 points scored by the runners up, Messrs J. Stevenson and Hickson (7 points). At tie conclusion cheers were given foi. the winners, tlie runners up and the donor of the trophies (.Mr J. J. .Mclntosh) who was present to witness theconcluding plia.se of the competition.
At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Messrs Evans and IV. Wilson. Justices, nil application for a prohibition order against a young man for whom Mr Sellers appeared, was adjourned till next Thursday, to bo heard by tbe Magistrate, tlie application to lie defended. Tlie same justices sat later to certify to the jury lists for Hokitika and Rimu districts, Sergt King appearing for the police who had compiled the lists. Requests to delete some half dozen names caused the bench to enquire the reason for tbe application, and it was explained that the list was being purged as far as possible of all those whom the police had reason to believe would not be satisfactory jurymen. The bench expressed satisfaction at tlie course proposed, and tlie names weije deleted, and the balance of the lists certified to for future use.
Tlie wedding took place in St John’s Church, Westport, on Wednesday morning, of Mr J. W. Stowell, eldest son of Air and Mrs J. W. Stowell, Westport, and Miss Mary Risk, second daughter of Mrs James Risk. Canon Conrsev conducted the service. Tlie bride was given away by her brother, Mr James Risk. Air S. Beswirk acted as the best man. The bride looked charming in a smart sage gabardine costume, with hat to match trimmed with heyma and gold. Tl’.e bridesmaid, Miss L. Risk, wore a peacock blue . coat frock and a large brown hat. Mrs Risk, mother of the bride, wore a navy braided costume. Airs Stowell, mother of the bridegroom, wore a black crepe de diene dress. Tlie happy couple left by special oar for Christchurch and the North Island where the honeymoon will he spent.
