There was splendid racing, but the investments showed a falling off. The machine for the day handled £66,415 against £82,217 for the second day last year, making a total for the meeting of £104,525 against £139,140 last year a decrease for the meeting of £34,615. ENGLISH GRAND NATIONAL. LONDON, April 1. The yearly outburst of indignation, following on the Grand National, in consequence of a fatal accident, due to the ugly obstacles in the race, is becoming more intense. 3wo horses were killed in the recent Grand National. The newspapers have since | ueii inundated with correspondence, some writers asserting that the Spanish hull lighting is less cruel than the Grand National, in which there arc thoroughbred horses dead and dying, while other <ompetitors are jumping over their bodies. The public indignation is so hot that Whittaker, the well known owner. trainer and rider, whose mount. Arrowdalc. fell when ho had a winning chance, wrote to the authorities suggesting alterations in the conditions of the race, providing only first class jumpers he allowed to compete, and that the j-oniaindei be grouped in a. Junior Grand Nationd. thus ensuring reasonably sized fields. Rt Hon Mr Short, (Home Minister) replying to questions on the subject in the. House of Commons, stated that 1,0 has not the power to probihit the Grand National. If, however, a horse is entered for) a. race for which it is unfitted, it is a. breach of the Protection to Animals Act. He has no such evidence that such was the case.

KING’S HORSES WIN. LONDON, April 1

The King’s colt Weather Vane won' tlio important three-year old Greenham Stakes at Newbury, heating the strong Derby fancy tainhach. Later His Majesty’s horse John Green won a five furlongs handicap. Enthusiasm over the Royal double was most intense. One critic declares it was the happiest day in the racing world since Minoru won the Derby. They point out the King’s success follows years of disappointment and discouragement. LONDON, March 31. The King and Queen witnessed the double at Newbury. Wethervane is entered for the Two Thousand Guineas, the Derby and 1 8t Leger.
