THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

Position Of The Great Banks. Now that the reports of all the great English banks have been published it is possible to take a view of the general position. As regards the deposits it is rather surprising to find this item showing an increase on the year. At the end of 1921 the combined deposits of the ten clearing banks amounted to £1,852,274,081 as compared with £1,840.433.176 at the end of 1920, an increase of about £12,000,000. There was, however, a, decrease of approximately £100,000,000 in the advances,-the aggregate of which in the case of the same ten banks was £768,702,861 at the end of 1921 and £862,632,340 at the end of 1920. Another feature was an increase of nearly £100,000,000 in the bills discounted.—British Finance Journal.
